Radiation Treatment Technologies Unduplicated in the Region
The team of physicians at Northeast Radiation Oncology Centers (NROC) offers the most comprehensive, advanced radiation therapy technologies available in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Doctors at NROC carefully advise patients about which type of radiation therapy is most effective for their type and stage of cancer.
Radiotherapy for Knee Osteoarthritis
Low-Dose Radiotherapy for Osteoarthritis is now available at Northeast Radiation Oncology Centers for patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis who continue to have significant pain despite standard care.
What is Osteoarthritis (OA)?
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting over 32 million adults in the United States. It occurs when the protective cartilage in joints wears down over time, leading to pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced mobility. The knees are among the most commonly affected joints.
Many patients reach a point when medications, physical therapy, injections, or lifestyle changes no longer provide adequate relief, but they are not ready for surgery.
What is Low-Dose Radiotherapy (LDRT)?
LDRT is a safe, non-invasive treatment that uses very low doses of radiation to reduce inflammation within the joint. It has been used successfully for decades in Europe (especially Germany) and is now gaining momentum in the United States.
Recent clinical trials have shown that low-dose radiotherapy can significantly reduce pain and improve function for many patients with knee osteoarthritis. It may also help some patients delay the need for joint replacement surgery.
How it Can Help:
✓ Reduced pain
Many patients experience meaningful pain relief within weeks.
✓ Improved function
Better ability to walk, climb stairs, and perform daily activities.
✓ Complements other treatments
Works safely alongside physical therapy, medications, and injections.
Is it Right for You?
This therapy is primarily used for the knee, but can also be considered for the shoulder, hand, hip and ankle in appropriate cases.
If you are living with ongoing joint pain and would like to learn whether low-dose radiotherapy may be appropriate for you, please call us at 570-504-7200 or speak with your physician.
